JOHN FRANKLIN13 “FRANK” ESTES

(1871 Ark. – 1937 Ariz.)

John Franklin “Frank” Estes was born on 8 December 1871 in Arkansas. He is most likely named after his father’s older brother. He died at age 65 on 9 January 1937 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona due to “cardiac decompensation and chronic interstitial nephritis.” Frank married on 1 February 1898 in Bradenton, Manatee County, Florida, Mary Christenia “Tenia” Alderman, daughter of David Harrison Alderman (1858 Ga. -1930 Fla.) and Florida Texas Gilley (1861 Fla. – 1904 Fla.), born on 17 August 1883 in Manatee County, Florida, and died on 2 August 1961 in Florida. 1

The 1880 US Census for Pleasant Ridge, Fulton County, Arkansas shows John Franklin living in at his parents’ farm. J.M. Estes (28, Ark., NC, Ala.) and Mary A. Estes (27, Tenn., Tenn., Tenn.) and their four children: John F. (8 Ark., Ark., Tenn.); Nancy F. (6, Ark., Ark., Tenn.); Lydia A. (4, Ark., Ark., Tenn.); and, William H. (2, Ark., Ark., Tenn.). Mary was pregnant. Several members of James' family lived nearby, including his brothers John and Calvin, sister Rebecca and his mother. At least 26 Estes families live in Fulton County.

Family tradition holds that John Franklin ran away from his parents’ farm at age 17, in about 1888, traveling to Florida where he became a successful businessman. He did not return to Arkansas with his family until 1925. If this account is accurate, John would have never met his four youngest siblings *Powell, Arles, Alvin and Beulah) until he was 54 and they were in their 30’s.

One story, passed down to the Arles Estes family, as told by his grandson Louis Franklin Estes to the author in 2007, says that Frank had returned from the field after an arduous day of farming to find his seven younger siblings seated at the table for supper. Father James told Frank to go chop some firewood for the stove. Upset by the perceived unfair treatment, he turned and walked away, not stopping until he arrived in Florida. See also, Duke at 46.

A version of the story passed down to Hugh Pryor Estes’ family is recounted by Jim Estes as follows: “About 1889, 17 year old John Franklin was caught fighting with a younger brother in the feeding barn. Their father, James Madison, gave John a whipping with the check lines of a harness. John Franklin walked off the family farm and did not return for several years.”

The 1890 US Census data do not exist.

The 1900 US Census, for Mitchellville, Manatee County, Florida shows John E., (28), living with Mary C. (16). They have been married for two years. It states she is the mother of one living child, but the child is not listed in their household. Next door are Mary's parents, David and Florida Alderman and Mary's younger siblings. On the other side of John and Mary lives John Gibson, who was shown as living with W.T. [William Triggs] and Martha (Johnson) Gilley2 at age two in the 1860 census. The Gibson family was close to the Johnsons. (Steven Gilley, shgorilley@earthlink.net )

At some point in the 1910-20 timeframe, John Franklin owned or ran the Coca-Cola Bottling plant in Bradenton. Contacts with the company have not produced any confirming information or records, other than that this plant began operations in 1908. A 1968 lawsuit against the company states that it was d/b/a the “Sarasota Coca Cola Bottling Co.” The Hillsborough County Florida Public Library website has photographs of a 1921 REO Bradenton Coca Cola delivery truck, taken by the Burgert Bros.3

BRADENTON COCA-COLA DELIVERY TRUCK 1921

The 1920 US Census for Bradenton, Florida shows John F. (48), Mary C. (36), David M. (18), Thelma (15), Arles S. (14), John C. (10), William J. (7), and Wilbur C. (7 mos.). John appears to be in the furniture business. Appendix. Granddaughter Sharon Estes indicates that he had a laundry service at some point.

John Franklin returned to the farm in 1925, bringing his own family of six children with him. The purpose for the trip was to come west, to Phoenix, for son David’s health. David, who was born in 1900 and thus was about 25, had asthma and doctors had advised him the dry desert air would help. (The 1920 US Census for Arizona shows only ten Estes families living in the State of Arizona, none of which are from our direct line.)

The story in the Arles Estes family states that John Franklin came unannounced to the James Madison farm. As they mounted the porch, he had his children each carry some kindling. When his father answered the door Frank exclaimed “I got the wood you wanted.” Unfazed, James replied “It’s about time.” They came in and had a wonderful reunion. Well, perhaps not as wonderful for his mother Mary Adeline McCord. John Franklin’s pranks were apparently not yet complete. As can be seen from the photographs on page 550, he had the 1908 family portrait altered by a studio, so that his image was superimposed in the spot where he should have been with his brothers. He replaced the family photo one night without a word, and when his mother happened by the mantle to see it the next day, almost fainted.

Duke writes: “Tracy Duke (John's niece) recalls that when ‘Uncle John’ and family finally returned to Arkansas, the rest of the family thought they were rich. They had been raising fruit in the Sunshine State. John wore new white shirts and drove a new car. The family liked to eat rice for breakfast, something odd in Arkansas. After spending a few months with the family, they moved on to Arizona.” Tracy Duke and husband Clarence Minor came to Phoenix, Arizona with him. After his death in 1937, they moved to Wenatchee, Washington.

Eventually, John Franklin’s family left Arkansas moving west in a slow fashion. They camped along side the road using their woodstove to cook breakfast and dinner.

According to the obituary of his brother John William “Bill” Estes, he left Arkansas for Tempe, Arizona in 1926. However, this omits one fact. John Franklin and son David Madison left Arkansas alone some time earlier. His family convinced them to go Arizona first and see if it suited them. The rest of the children (born 1904-1912) enrolled in school. The family followed soon thereafter, but not without some entanglements.

The last address of John and Mary Estes was 1946 E. Washington, Phoenix, Arizona, which at present appears to be a public works facility, about ¼ mile east of Interstate 10, and northwest of Sky Harbor international Airport. Several of his grandchildren were born at this home.

John owned and operated a garbage collection business, known as the Estes Service Company, Garbage Service Company, and the Arizona Service Company were. The landfill was quite successful as well, and was sold for a handsome profit in the 1960’s, just before becoming declared a Super Fund site. This business is described more fully in the section on John Franklin’s son, John William “Bill” Estes, at 635.

The children of John13 Franklin Estes and Mary Christenia Alderman are:

1. David Madison Estes, born 15 November 1900 in Parrish, Manatee, Florida, died 9 May 1976 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, married Evelyn Pearl Hall, born 28 March 1911 in Grainger, Grayson, Texas, died 20 December 2001 in Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona;

MARY CHRISTENIA ALDERMAN

(1883 Fla. – 1961 Fla.)

The last Alderman in the Estes line, Mary Christenia Alderman – eight generations removed from our immigrant ancestor William Alderman -- was born 17 August 1883 in Manatee Co., Florida, and died 2 August 1961 in Florida. Mary died in Florida as she went there every summer for three-four months. She married John Franklin Estes on 1 February 1898 in Bradenton, Manatee County, Florida, son of James Estes and Mary McCord. John was born 8 December 1871 in Arkansas, and died on 9 January 1937 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona.

John Franklin Estes’ marriage to Mary Christenia Alderman brought him additional historic ties. The most distant Alderman ancestor of John Franklin’s wife to whom we can definitely trace without further research is William Alderman Sr. (abt. 1640 Conn. - 1697 Conn.). William Alderman was born about 1640, in Massachusetts or in Windsor, Connecticut, or perhaps emigrated from England. 4 He was in Windsor in 1672, later removing to Farmington, and still later to Simsbury, Connecticut, where he married Mary Case (1660 Conn. – 1725 Conn.). "William Alderman, of Windsor 1672, Farmington and Simsbury, married Mary Case, daughter of John Case, at Simsbury in 1679. William Alderman died about 1697 leaving a considerable landed estate to his widow…."5

SARAH13 AGNES ESTES

(1885 Ark. – 1885 Ark.)

Sarah Agnes Estes was born 6 January 1885 in Fulton County, Arkansas, died 26 January 1885 in Fulton County, Arkansas.

Some say it is for infant Agnes that the Town of Agnos, Arkansas was named. The spelling was simply a mistake. The community was first known as Crossroads, or Pleasant Ridge (so often mentioned in the Estes census entries). The town stood at the crossroads of the north-south route between Batesville and West Plains, Missouri, and the north-south route between Salem and Hardy. Another version is that in 1880, blacksmith Isaac “Ike” Tucker, in whose home the post office was located, was asked by the postal agent for a name, as Crossroads already existed. When he called to his wife Agnes for assistance, she replied she had to get the dough off her hands first, so he told the agent to name it after her. As this Agnes was not born for five years after the post office was established, it may have been another Agnes Estes. 7
